November 2001 launch report (11/17/2001)
Wait a minute, are we sure that this is November?
On Saturday, November 17, a good crew of MASA-ites gathered
at Sunrise Park Middle School in White Bear Lake for the last
official launch of 2001. It was an improbably nice day with
sunshine and blue skies. The only downside was a breeze out of
the south
A big thanks to:
- Steve Robb, for hauling out all the gear
- LCO volunteers: Steve Robb, Ed Eastman, Glen Overby,
Jeff Hove
- RSO volunteers: Alan Estenson, Art Gibbens, Kerry
Hodges, Steve Robb
- Everyone who came early and/or stayed late to help with the
range equipment
One special event was a Fat Boy drag race. All types of Fat
Boy's appeared - from stock to highly modified. Most flew on C
motors, but a few used D's. The participants were: Alan
Estenson, Brian Fergus, Glen Overby, Steve Robb, Dave Fergus, and
Lincoln Kibsguard.
Another special event was a Stomp rocket drag race. With
the recent building session, a full rack of 8 stomp rockets were
presented for this drag race. Some flew on B's, most on C's,
and there was even a 2-stager amongst them! Participants
were: Alan Estenson, Steve Robb, Craig Hansen, Hugh Hansen,
Dave Fergus, Phil Gibbens, Art Gibbens, and Jeff Hove. This
was a blast! (literally) All 8 launched - and everybody
started laughing! Lots of fun!
A few of the flights:
Dave Fergus had a successful first flight of his
mutant-combo-3-stomp-rockets-in-one Tri-Stomp on a cluster of 3
B6-4's. Neat! Dave also flew his (KosRox) Apollo Test
Capsule on a B4-2 and his 2-stage Stomp rocket. Ellison and
Stuart Lenz twice launched their rocket made from a Crest toothpaste
dispenser. It flew quite well, but could maybe use a shorter
delay. Ellison also flew his LOC Aura a couple times on
D12's. To finish off 2001, Alan Estenson flew the Monolith
again on a C5-3.
Jeff Hove launched his 25-year-old Centuri Taurus on a
C6-5. Kerry Hodges suffered some pavement impact damage when
his 2X Goblin had a late ejection on an E11. Ken Jarosch flew
several rockets including a great flight of his Super Big Bertha on
a D12-5. Russ Durkee flew his R/C Cuda rocket-boosted
sailplane followed later by an Astrocam.
Neal Higgins flew a little Check 6 on a D12-7, and it actually
landed on the field. Later, Neal flew an SDI Spinnaker on a
B6-4; this is a square, wooden, laser-cut rocket. Dave
Leininger continued to abuse his Estes Snitch; this time flying it
on an E11.
With the breeze, several rockets drifted off the field into the
houses to the north. Unfortunately, a couple of them were lost
to the rocket-eating-trees.
