July 2002 picnic launch report (7/22/2002)
Eatin' and rocket launchin' - what an evening!
On Saturday July 20, 51 MASA members gathered at the VFW soccer
fields near Elk River for the annual MASA summer picnic. By
having the picnic at this site, rocket launching was added to the
regular picnic activities of eating and socializing. Setting
up their own launch equipment in a relaxed misfire alley style, the
first flight took to the skies a bit after 3 pm, and the last flight
landed about 8:30 pm. There were some 70 flights in all.
Flight cards were used to record the details. [Although it
seems that some people didn't bother to fill them out. There
were almost certainly more than 70 flights.]

A few of the flights:
David Whitaker flew the only multi-stage flight of the day.
He fulfilled his NARTREK Bronze 2-stage requirement by launching a
Comanche-3 on B6-0 to A8-3. Ted Cochran flew his Sling Wing on
an A10 to fulfill the NARTREK Silver boost glider flight requirement
with a time of more than 30 seconds. Ted also flew an Astrocam
a couple times (until a hard landing on asphalt) and his trusty
Silver Comet twice.
Sarah Fergus flew her scratchbuilt "Gollum and his
Precious" rocket for the first time using a C5-3. Rick
Vatsaas "Vinyl Pigskin of Porcine Revenge" whistled all
the way up and all the way down on a a 1/2A. Jeff Hove had a
loud CATO of an old motor in his Stomp Rocket.
This day also marked the 33rd anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar
landing. To commemorate that event, Jeff Hove launched his
25-year-old Saturn V rocket on a B motor.
